How to make the most of office parties (or any other event you’re attending).

The festive season is here! Cue twinkly lights, mince pies and a flurry of work events. Whether you love a good get-together or need a bit of a nudge to join in, this can be your chance to connect and show up as the best version of you.

I’m not just talking about donning a sparkly jumper or grabbing a glass of fizz.

Office parties and team outings give you a chance to chat to people you don’t usually cross paths with, strengthen relationships and maybe even spark a bit of future collaboration. But how can you make the most of the opportunity?

Before you go …

Think about what you’ll wear. From “smartish” to full-on festive, events vary. If you’re not sure just ask. Wearing something you feel comfortable in makes the whole experience easier.

If you’re not a great socialiser, set yourself one or two small intentions for the event. Maybe you want to chat to someone new, make sure you speak to a particular colleague or client or simply practise being more present. Then promise yourself that you won’t leave until you have hit your intentions … a little focus goes a long way.

At the event …

Turn up a few minutes early. This can make things feel less awkward for you. You’ll find it easier to strike up a conversation and settle in before the crowd arrives.

Keep chat light and friendly. Ask what’s new in their world, what they’re planning over the holidays or what they get up to outside of work. Simple questions often lead to the best conversations.

Remember, it is a party … enjoy yourself; laugh, relax and if there’s alcohol, pace yourself. You want to be remembered for all the right reasons!

When you meet someone new, keep your introduction simple and natural, no need for a big pitch. Be curious, ask questions and listen well. People remember how you make them feel, and showing genuine interest creates the strongest connections.

If you hit it off with someone or see an opportunity then suggest a follow up call and swap contact details. You can follow-up tomorrow and potentially turn a brief conversation into something more meaningful.

After the party …

Spend a moment the next day thinking about what went well. Maybe you surprised yourself by starting more conversations than usual, or perhaps you clicked with someone you hadn’t spoken to before.

If you made new contacts, follow up while the chat is still fresh in your mind and send a brief thank-you to the organisers; it’s thoughtful and you’re more likely to be invited again!

Parties are a brilliant chance to connect, communicate and have a bit of fun. Say yes to the invites, turn up with a smile and stay open to the people around you.

You never know where one great conversation might lead.
